Derek Jackson was born in Great Britain on May 15, 1925. His family moved to Canada in 1929 and settled in Calgary. Jackson volunteered for service and manned an escort vessel plying the Atlantic Ocean between St. John, Newfoundland and Londonderry, Ireland. Jackson returned to Calgary and joined the Fire Department on May 1, 1946. Jackson expressed his intention to eventuallly be the head of the department throughout his career and on December 8, 1972, his ambition paid off and he became Fire Chief. Chief Jackson was responsible for implementing the 911 emergency system, creating a paramedic service, and setting up an integrated arson investigation unit alongside the police. Chief Derek Jackson retired on August 17, 1979.
