George Fowler Skene was born on November 29, 1889 in Aboine, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. He moved to Calgary when he was 21 in 1910 and began working with Grimson & Brown Contractors. Skene joined the Calgary Fire Brigade on November 4, 1912 and spent four years stationed in France during the First World War. Skene became Fire Chief on March 15, 1951. During his three-year term as chief, he increased the personnel of the department from 130 to 225 and added six trucks to the fleet. Chief Skene retired on November 29, 1954, and passed away on January 3, 1959.
