John Thomas Shelley

John Thomas Shelley was born in Hagersville, Ontario on April 4, 1885 and moved to Calgary with his family in the fall of 1888. His first job was as an apprentice steamfitter before joining the Fire Brigade in 1905 as a volunteer. Shelley spent most of his early years as the Captain at either No. 5 or No. 2 Stations until his promotion to Assistant Chief in 1943. He was appointed Fire Chief on May 1, 1945 and retired April 4, 1950 after a 45 year career with the department. John Thomas Shelley was the last of the old volunteers.
