ERIC FRANK BURTON Lance Corporal Burton died of wounds at 82nd Field Ambulance on May 9th, 1915 at the age of 23. In a letter to his mother, Chief Smart says “His kindly disposition earned for him the intimate friendship of all members of this department [...] Immediately we learned of the sad intelligence, we hoisted Flags to Half-Mast on all of the ten Fire Stations located throughout the city, thus paying what little tribute we could to the memory of your gallant son and our popular friend.” Lance Corporal Burton is buried in the Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery in Belgium. JOHN BROWN GALLACHER Acting Corporal Gallacher was killed in action in the vicinity of Sanctuary Wood sometime between June 2nd and 4th, 1916 at the age of 25. Once a brave and noble Calgary Firefighter, Acting Corporal Gallacher is now remembered at Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial in Belgium. John Gallacher, 1914, FMC Collection
